I have had my rope for 3 years. There has not been any significant falls taken on it... It got a knot in it yesterday after flaking it on the second pitch (while it was still attached to my partner and me. Then before the rappel, I completely flake out the rope from end to end. On the way down the rope was tangled and twisted as fuck.

1. Has anyone had any problems like this with their ropes?
2. Anyone have ideas on how to fix this?
3. Or, is it time to retire my rope.

Thanks,
M.

1. probably... happens when you flake it with people tied into both ends sometimes... also if you don't uncoil it properly when it's brand new

2. rap off the ends a few times

3. probably not

1. It tends to happen to all ropes depending on how they are cared for or stored/coiled.
2. I would go through it meter by meter and literally align the rope based on the pattern every meter. This usually means every meter I give the rope a quarter or half twist to align the pattern again. It is slow but usually does the trick. By the last 10 meters your going to have an even worse mess but once you deal with that it should really help.
3. If you do the above and it is just as bad maybe your experiencing the sheath twisting around the core? In that case I would call up Petzl and at least proceed with caution

2. Loop the rope around your mail box and stretch the rope all the way out laying on the ground with the strands equal. Connect your ATC like you would rappel, up close to the mailbox post, and then pull the device to the other end by the caribiner.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
