Petition for Climbing Access in Mueller State Park - PLEASE POST!

The Access Fund is trying to gauge the interest of those wanting to climb in Mueller State Park and the adjacent Division of Wildlife property to determine if they will get involved in the process of trying to restore access. This includes Dome Rock, Four Mile Dome and West Rock (I believe there are other formations there as well). This is a beautiful serene area just outside of Colorado Springs that once allowed for climbing but now prohibits it (at least on Dome Rock as far as I can confirm). Those I have spoken with at Mueller State Park and the DOW cannot confirm why this closure was enforced in the first place but speculate it has something to do with big horn sheep calving grounds and golden eagle nesting.

Please show your support for this cause by posting on this thread.

R.D. Pascoe of the Access Fund has graciously offered to be our spokesperson at the public presentation portion of the Wildlife Commission meeting on July 7th to get the ball rolling on this matter. We would like to get a group of concerned climbers to attend in support. This public presentation portion is pretty short (around 3 min) so will not require a large time investment. Keep in mind that this is just the beginning stages of what could be a long process and that our presence there will be mainly to impress upon the Wildlife Commission how many interested climbers there are.

Please private message me through my profile with your contact info so we can get an idea of how many will attend and coordinate the meeting time/place, etc. Thanks!

UPDATE 7/5/11

I just got off the phone with RD Pascoe of the Access Fund. He spoke with an individual at the DOW who said the public presentation portion is actually to address items on the official agenda – not new items. He suggested that waiting to get on the official agenda would be a better approach... So we will not be going up to Denver on Thursday after all.

Thanks to all that offered to come up on such short notice and apologies if this screws up your schedules for this week. I will update you all with information concerning the upcoming DOW meeting once RD gets back with me and hopefully we'll have even more climbers able to attend.

If this is, in fact, the reason why the park was closed then it seems as though a seasonal closure during the aforementioned period would be a simple solutuion and allow cli8mbing access during the rest of the year.

I am def. in support of opening up some new (new to me anyways) rock here in Co. and would be willing to volunteer some time to help restore access to said area.

I've been gathering info about climbing areas around Pikes Peak and having seen published info about it I always wondered what happened and hadn't gotten around to asking. Thanks for doing this. There's a lot of great rock back there with some good history. It would be great to get this opened back up.

I'm definitely interested! I used to have the old Elevenmile guide book with the section on Mueller State Park. It looks like a really nice climbing area.

Yes, re-open this public place to climbers. I am willing to volunteer to help make it happen.

Sign me up! I probably wouldn't have any other reason to visit the park other than climbing.

Count me in. Maybe we can get the meetup to pitch in to help with trail work etc.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
