"Popeye" is a very secluded crag in a climbing area about an hour and a half drive from Manizales. There are maybe a couple dozen sport routes here ranging from 5.8 to 5.11c. This area has a tremendous potential and is currently being developed by local climbers. Unfortunately, there is not a large climbing community in Manizales and the rock doesn't get a lot of traffic. There is potential for some good trad leads, but many of these potential routes need to be cleaned as they have a fair amount of vegetation on ledges and pockets. There are a number of crags that are higher up the mountain from "popeye" but they have not been thoroughly investigated. The approach to these rock faces is also difficult as there is waist high vegetation. It is best to climb here during the morning hours when the sun is shining on the rock face. The weather can be quite cold and I would recommend bringing plenty of clothing. When the sun shines, however, the climbing is quite pleasant.
90 minutes from Manizales in the direction of nevado del ruiz. Ask local climbers at Grip Gimnasio de Escalada located in Palogrande stadium.
