In 2004, Canadian climber Gary Burton Henning visited Panama to travel around the country and maybe look for an investment oportunity around. He found a small town located in the west side of the country called Boquete wich is a valley rounded by mountains and the Baru Volcano (highest point of this country with 3474 m 11,397 feet elevation)Boquete, wich is known for its coffee and friendly people, is an amazing landscape featuring incredibly basalt rock formations originated by the last volcano eruption many years ago. Interested in climbing around Gary started to look for other local climbers around but he couldn´t find any. After a while Gary come to meet young local Boquetenian Cesar Augusto Melendez, who soon would tell him that climbing was not even yet introduced to Panama. they become good friends and soon Gary started to teach Cesar the basics about climbing and set up the first known sport route in Panama. After Gary returned to his actual homeplace at California, Cesar started his own company providing climbing tours. Now a day, there are 3 developed sectors of climbing in Boquete, all sport routes featuring routes between 5.7 and 5.12d. Cesar is still in cahrge of providing climbing tours to visitors with his local partner Marcos Gonzalez and supported by Gary Henning in California. For more information about history of climbing in Panama give Gary a call at 9513334626 or Cesar in Panama at (507)67647918

Climbing with Cesar and Ruben as guides. They took us to an awesome canyon outside Boquete for our first time ever doing deep water solos. Beautiful river--I definitely recommend asking Cesar about it when you're down there.
