You stay away from mah pig!
Hey all, we've had a couple great weekends already, and are psyched for many more before the summer smarm descends on WV. I just wanted to tell y'all the tentative plan for this year, since a lot of campers have been asking about when we'll begin construction on the showerhouse, covered cooking area, etc.

Last year we were very pleased with the new tent platforms, trails to the on sight boulders, and the water tank, but we REALLY hope to kick it up a notch this year. So here's the deal: we've submitted applications for permits to all the necessary agencies, which have to be cleared before we can start building any permanent structures. After we have the permits, we will gradually begin work, starting with getting a water line in (yaay!), and then go from there.

For right now, the campground is about the same as last year: we have TONS of tent platforms, whether you want a secluded, wooded spot, or a central group party spot. We have port-a-johns. We will have limited water for drinking and dishwashing, though it is still wise to bring your own 5-gallon jug (especially if you are sketched about drinking WV water, hehe). It is still haul-your-own-trash out; the NPS visitor center across the highway has garbage and recycling bins. It's always a good idea to bring a tarp or two to suspend over your tent in case the rain dumps, and even earplugs, since there has been this damned hound dog nearby that bays all night.

Fees are the same as last year: $7/night/person, $6 for Access Fund Members, $5 for AAC members, cash or credit. I'll be making the rounds each morning to collect fees, but hopefully one of the improvements we'll see this year is some sort of self-serve pay station.

Thanks, and hope to see you all this season! Feel free to contact us through our facebook page, or email me at pnelson@americanalpineclub.org

Camhead, your campground is awesome.

The tent platforms will keep your shit dry even with 4" of snow!

But seriously, I have never heard a dog bark as many times in a row as that fucker at 4 in the morning when his asshole owner kicks him outside. We need to get the full resources of the AAC on this problem right away.

Yeah, it's West Virginia. Too many people treat dogs like lawn ornaments here. All I can say is that the barking is slightly less annoying if you camp on the lower section of the loop.

Me and the offspring walking back to the car after...
Thanks for the update man. I was out there last weekend but stayed at Ray's. Unfortunately, I didn't know that they're not open for the season yet officially. Their showers and turlets were completely down. Had I known that, I definitely would have stayed at AAC. I'll be back in a few weeks and probably stay there. I'm also seriously considering bringing some ground beef with some sedatives in it. Just enough for a lengthy nap.

That's funny- we also stayed at Ray's last weekend. We were the only people in the lower area, so I guess you were that single tent in the upper. This is why people should stitch their MP usernames on their tents- if you're nice on MP you'll meet more MP'er in real life, and if you're a jerk people can light your tent on fire. Hope you had a good time- Friday and Saturday were as good as it gets.

This past weekend? We had three sites with about five tents set up. Past the bathrooms. I do remember one other party being there in the lower section near the check in station and wood shed. You ain't bullshittin' about Friday and Saturday. Even Sunday wasn't awful. Choosing to be on the south side of the river wasn't the brightest idea though. As far as user names, mine is my name. Anyone is welcome at my fire and feast- as long as you can handle lies, spraying, and offensive language.

Camhead, thanks for all the work on the campground. I was there last week with my dog and my buddy. We arrived that crazy day when the power was out and had never been to the New before. The tent platforms were great and saved us as we got snowed on big time. We were able to stay dry and send once it warmed up. I will definitely be staying there next time I visit and look forward to all the new additions as they get approved and installed. Thanks again.

Hey all. Is there a specified check in time for the campground? I'll be getting there probably about 5 or 6 am on a Friday morning. Thanks for any info.

No, no check in times, no reservations. Come in whenever and I'll find you in the morning.

Coming solo and I need climbing partners. I hope there are solo climbers I can connect with you.

It is too rainy and cold up in the North East....
