Private Property - leave no trace and respect the area
West side of the boulder that contains The Whale.
Description
A bouldering area just outside of Notrees, TX surrounded by oil fields and pump jacks. Great quality sandstone comparable in quality to the rock in Rocklands, South Africa. Mostly short problems with very low starts in the V0-V6 range with some potential for more difficult problems. Two small climbing areas to the noth and south of parking with most of the development in the north field of boulders. Not more than a day or two worth of problems.
Getting There
About 25 miles west of Odessa, TX. Go 4 miles west of 158/302 junction on 302. Turn south onto FM 2019 (there is a white Apache North Fields sign here). Head south on FM 2019 3 miles until you go over a yellow cattle guard with a Apache Speed Limit 25 sign and the paved road turns into dirt. Take the second right (west) off the dirt road, follow it for .6 miles, turn off to the right (north), and park in the area near a pump jack. The main field is a 5 minute walk north of here and another field is about a 5 minute walk south.
I am curious if there are any access issues to be aware of with Notrees. Is there an agreement with the landowner? I am planning on spending some time in Midland and don't want to get shot at.
FYI, this area is on private property. As far as I know, the rancher who owns the land does not allow climbers without his explicit permission. The land is leased by Apache.
