Nothing to do with climbing - Looking for Free Camping in Big Sur

Driving down the coast on PCH soon, looking for some free camping in the Big Sur area. Hoping somebody here has some advice. I hear some people have just pulled over on a pullout and set up camp, any truth to that? Ideally it would be on the sand, in a secluded cove, nude mermaids handing out 30 year old wine, etc...you get the idea, i'm trying to look good in front of the lady here.

"Free camping" and "California" are becoming increasingly rare. You stand a pretty good chance of getting hassled if you bandit camp just on the side of the road on the PCH. If you pull off on a side road and go for a ways...not too bad. I would go to Andrew Molera SP. You gotta pay ($10 I think), but it's worth every penny. Same with Pfifer Burns SP.

$10 isn't so bad...i was reading $21 for some sites. Thanks for the info Ian, i'll check it out. Any other help is appreciated.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
