The city council chambers were full last night, showing deep concern over the future condition of Rock Canyon. Good to know that neighbors, climbers, hikers, environmentalists, etc. are all actively involved in this.

How can we help?
Here's an excerpt from the article linked above:
"The city has expressed an interest in preserving the canyon, but Mayor Lewis Billings said the application must be treated as any other. He said Davis "will be allowed to go through the normal rules." But he offered suggestions for those interested in fighting the proposal, including collaborating with Red Slab LLC, an entity set up by Sen. John Valentine, R-Orem, and Phil Lowry, a Provo lawyer, to acquire the land and quell extraction attempts.

"What can the public do? The public can participate in the public hearing before the Planning Commission," Billings said. "Those who want to preserve Rock Canyon may also want to consider working with Red Slab LLC."

Kudos to Valentine, Lowry, and Red Slab, LLC. I'm a fan.

I'm not really a fan of Billings, though. How many of Provos most unique architectural things have been destroyed under his watch(i.e. Hotel Roberts). That his brother was in jail for fraud should come as no surprise.

That's a bold statement, coming as it is from the Dark Lord himself ;-)

A couple more articles, including the first interview I've seen with Davis himself about it:

The website mentioned in one of those articles appears to be up and providing good organizational info:
http://preserverockcanyon.com/

Looks like the site admin could use some help gathering information & ideas to enable effective action and letter writing.

Thanks, David.

For any who are interested, the site David posted also has a link to a facebook group dedicated to the cause.

I've written a couple of emails--one to the City Council members and one to Brent Wilde--but I would be happy to help with a more formal effort if any assistance is needed. I guess I'll contact Phil Lowry about it, but if anyone else knows something concrete people can do, please post it up here.

Nevermind, that website has some pretty good information about things people can do. Whoever put that together is doing a good job.

One of the forums on the site is asking for ideas for providing evidence that the paved path is used for foot traffic into the canyon. http://preserverockcanyon.com/2009/04/08/providing-proof-loc>>>>>

I put together a list of links to rock canyon areas where the approach directions explicitly mention using the paved path. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to post it on the site, so I'm posting it here.

The Davis application hosted on the preserverockcanyon.com site doesn't appear to claim, "that this route is NOT used for foot traffic into the canyon" as stated on the "Providing Proof - Location of Trail" page; nevertheless, here are a couple of photos showing foot traffic on the proposed truck route:

Hangin' in Maple.

I just wanted to say thanks to David for the preserve Rock Canyon link. I found it to be informative and useful. In addition, I was wondering if anyone could post some before and after pictures of the last mining episode in 2003. It might be helpful to see what kind of scare has been left, and what scare could potentially arise from the new mining proposal.

I can't believe I clipped this....

I noticed that the Tribune article said that the city planner has only received about 20 letters, I think we might have to get a little more proactive about this. Email friends, family and pretty much everyone you know that would like to help and get them to write a letter. I think this is an important issue, but most people I called today had no idea that it was happening.

at preserverockcanyon.com they have good resources for anyone who wants to write to city officials. I think it's a good idea. Like Christian said, get your friends and family and anyone who appreciates Rock Canyon to do so. Use Facebook. Ha ha.
