Four expert climbers on the North Ridge.

Description

An alternative to the more popular South Spur Route, the North Ridge is non-technical with some very loose volcanic scree. Straight forward route finding. You can bypass most obstacles on either side. Climb the ridge to the top and hike about a mile across the summit plateau, to the true summit.

Permit required to climb Mt Adams. Available from Randle ranger station. Cost is $15 weekends or $10 mid-week.

Descend the route.

The earlier in the season you climb this route, the less scree you have to contend with. I climbed this route the same week that the road to the trailhead opened up. I still had a couple thousand feet of scree to deal with.

Location

Access is from the Killen Creek Trail.
From Randle, take Rt 131 toward Mt St Helen.
Turn left on Cispus Rd., FR23. Go approx 19 miles and go left onto FR21. After 4.5 miles, turn right on FR56. Go about 2.9 miles and turn right
on FR5603. You will immediately pass Orr Creek sno-park. Go 5.1 miles and turn right on FR2329.
Follow for 4 miles to Killen Creek Trailhead.

Hike the Killen Creek trail for 3.5 miles and cross the Pacific Crest Trail. Compass advised from here, esp. early season as trail may be snow covered. Hike Southeast to the North Ridge.

Protection

Ice ax, crampons
