The Crucible

Description

A fun sport route up steep but nicely featured rock. Crux comes at bulge between fourth and fifth bolts. Some avoid the crux by traversing left around bulge and regaining route above the bulge. That leaves a scary fall potential on lead but works well on TR.

Location

Left-most route on Roadside Attraction Rock just on the other side of the fence away from highway. Listed as route #9 on route topo photo for Las Conchas Cattle Call Wall.

Protection

6 bolts to two-bolt anchor.

Rope drag on this one is pretty high. Fun climb, though.

Jason Halladay and Allison Fritz replaced the anchors on this climb in June 2008, thanks to a hardware donation from NMCRAG.

And to add to George's comment, we left the two bolt/hangers that did serve as the anchor in situ. I didn't have a small enough socket to remove the five-piece bolts. The hangers are a bit loose anyhow so we opted to install new bolts to go with the new Fixe sport anchors. I'll go back to remove the old hangers at some point but if someone else wants 'em, go for it!

The Orange hanger on the top right spins; Can't get it out or in. Tightened the others today.

FA Marc Beverly.

A new bolt is in at the bottom per request. So, you can do the harder start (left) or the easier start (right) and still clip.

I'm not sure why I had to go back and put in a second set of anchor clips after you guys replaced the anchor that was only a year or two old ?

Yeah, I'm not sure either Marc. What's up with that? I didn't hear a thing about it. Explain? Nature of the rock? Is the NMCRAG-donated anchor hardware still up there?
