The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Southern Nevada District Office released a Draft Wilderness Management Plan (Plan) for Arrow Canyon, home to the Le Reve and many other world class sport climbs. Arrow Canyon is within Arrow Canyon Wilderness and the Plan prohibits any new bolts, effectively eliminating new routes. The Plan allows existing routes to remain and replacement of existing hardware will be done on a 1:1 basis in consultation with the Las Vegas Climbers Liaison Council.
Overall the Plan recognizes climbing as a legitimate use of Arrow Canyon Wilderness; however prohibiting new routes is totally unnecessary. A new route permit process is a less restrictive alternative that would protect cultural resources and wilderness characteristics while allowing reasonable development.
The BLM is seeking public comments on the Plan until May 17, 2012. Personalized comments are always the most effective and can be submitted using the letter writing tool below.
