Description Suggest change

The Reno area is a surprising year-round hub for climbing. Although climbing in Reno itself is somewhat scarce, a 45-minute drive westward will get you to some of California's finest summer cragging at Donner Summit, and a 90-minute drive will get you to most crags in the Tahoe Basin. There are a handful of bouldering areas (Doyle, Purgatory) within an hour or so north of Reno that are best in winter months. Heading south down Highway 395, you can be in Tuolumne, Bishop, or many High Sierra destinations in less than 4 hours.

Reno sits in the rainshadow of the Sierra Nevada and has a relatively mild climate compared to the higher elevations. If it's snowing in the mountains, Reno has a newfound wealth of climbing gyms - see "Resources" below.

Getting There Suggest change

From points east, Interstate 80 is best.

From Northern and Central California, either Interstate 80 or Highway 50 will do. Interstate 80 will take you past Donner Summit. If you come by way of I80, take Highway 395 south to Carson City. Highway 50 will take you past Lover's Leap, through South Tahoe and into Carson City.

From Southern California, either take Interstate 5 to Highway 50 or Interstate 80. Alternatively, coming up Highway 395 will take you through Bishop and along the Eastern Sierra.

From Las Vegas, take Highway 95 North. Be careful in Beatty, Goldfield and Tonopah (and other small towns along the way), the police there are very diligent in enforcing the speed limits.

The Reno/Tahoe airport is the only place where the major airlines fly into. It is very easy to get in and out of.

There are numerous hotels, motels and camping areas in the Reno/Carson City area.

Mesa Rim features 24000 sq feet of climbing and 52 foot walls. There is a large bouldering section, a fitness area with weights, yoga and a sauna. The staff is friendly and supportive and there are a wide variety of classes including summer programs for kids.

NorthPeak Climbing and Fitness is the newest gym in the area and is the only gym in the area to offer indoor auto-belays. It also has a brand new fitness center and yoga room. With a wide variety of gym to crag courses, NorthPeak is a great place to help you get outdoors.
