One of my first trad climbs, Ooga Chocka at Crowde...
Anyone been climbing in Ecuador? I will be in Cuenca for a while this summer (how long is yet to be determined).

My girlfriend is from Cuenca and has been climbing there for years, so she knows the surrounding areas pretty well, especially the two main local crags, Cojitambo and Paute.

Are there any other spots that are a bit further afield that are can't-miss good? Also any beta on Chimborazo would be appreciated... I doubt I will be there long enough to summit but I can dream...

Finally, beta on good sites for local beta (monodedo.com is all I have found) or guidebooks would be great. Spanish is OK.

Thanks!

I was there in 2001. We were climbing mountains not crags so can't really help you except to say why does Chimbo have to be a dream? Make it a reality... gearwhore

At the matching crux
My brother spent 2 summers there climbing and is tight with the core climbing crew. Probably knows your girlfriend too.

Make sure to check out the new gym Cuenca Climbing Center. It was opened by a good friend of ours just last year. Also - where will you be flying from?

If you're willing to bring another piece of luggage filled with holds or random climbing gear for the gym (they'll cover all your expenses of course) you'll definitely score yourself the best local guides and tours that you could hope for. PM me if you're interested.

Gearwhore - I'm down man! I just don't know how feasible it is given all the other stuff I have on the agenda, limited time, and total lack of experience.

I am mostly worried about the altitude... I have never been above 7K feet. Andrea has some friends who have summited, so if I can get them to go with me it would be a lot more possible. I can probably rent gear... I guess as long as I find experienced companions and have enough time to do it without dying of HACE I will make it happen!

Please, send me a PM and let me know how it was for you! Any and all beta is appreciated.
