Hello,

Was wondering if anyone knew the name of the hotel at the base of the Eiger, in the movie The Eiger Sanction.

Thanks,

Kleine Scheidig--this is translated as hotel of the bird shit

I was talking the other day about seeing the hill that Dr. Hemlock threw Pope down. Then he pulls his tie tight and bitch slaps him a little. Good times.

Kleine Scheidegg is the pass where the hotel is located, the hotel itself is called "Hotel Bellevue des Alpen". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klein…

The most plausible translation for the name "Scheidegg" seems to be a divide between watersheds, at least in this context. fodors.com/community/europe…

Definitely nothing to do with bird shit.

Doesn't 'kleine' mean small? So small hotel? small hill that Hemlock kicks Pope's ass down?

"kleine" does mean small, "Scheiden" is to separate or part. "Egg" is part of a lot of place names in that part of the world, it seems to be a Swiss-German version of "Ecke", meaning corner. "Egg" as used here is apparently pronounced "eck" in Swiss-German. So "Scheidegg" seems to refer to a "dividing corner", like the dividing ridge between two watersheds.

It's fun to stay there. I have twice now. Cheaper in summer. For the price of the room you also get served a fantastic five course meal. After dinner they open up the formal bar which is really neat. You'll feel like your in a different time in that room. You'll feel the need to wear a silk smoking jacket.

I wonder how many guests who visit are Eiger Sanction fans, or have any idea of the film being made there? As a total fan of the flick, I'd savor every moment and drink enjoyed there.

They also offer a cool webcam of the Eiger.

That's really a cool web cam! It appears to refresh every minute. Looks like they are having a good ski season up there.

Here's a great slideshow from the film production. These are from the location shots on the Eiger and neighboring peaks. One scene is apparently at the actual start to the Hinterstoisser Traverse.

Better brush up on your speed reading cuz those slides automatically go by about one every 2 seconds.

Yea, totally stoked. Going to be one of the highlights of my trip. Was surfing the tube late the other night, and Eiger Sanction came on. Thought....well I'll just watch it for a few minutes. Ended up watching the whole thing again, great movie. That bar sounds cool, have to check that out. Planning on hiking in to the base, and being humbled.

Favorite line "not exact"..... Well the storms going to come in on the back side, and they're not going to see it coming. At that point, your not going to be able to see through it....your not going to be able to walk through it.... all you can do is fall in up to your neck in it.....

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
