Description Suggest change

The iconic scoria cone mountain in the north of Tongariro national park. Local Maori legend say that Ngātoro-i-rangi called volcanic fire from his homeland Hawaiki which eventually emerged at Ngauruhoe. It is not surprisng then that this is still an active volcano, although it is generally safe to climb. Not the most technically challenging summit, but great views and aesthetically pleasing.

Getting There Suggest change

Unsealed road off SH37 leads to start of popular Tongariro crossing hiking trail. Follow the hiking trail up the "devils staircase" up to the saddle between Mt Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. Alternative aproaches can be made from the desert road section of SH1.
