Moving to San Antonio Texas... Checking out the climbing situation...
|
I'm moving from Ky to San Antonio in a few weeks, it will be a while before I get settled and able to start climbing again but I'm looking for groups and places to go. I have never climbed outdoors, all we have in this area of Ky is gyms, which get boring after you solve the same problem 10 times. I would like someone to "show me the ropes" and have a blast doing it!!!! |

You'll be just 6 hours (and one border crossing) from El Potrero Chico--world capital of big wall sport climbing! |
|
checkout erockonline.com, very strong and welcoming community, lots of limestone sport in and west of Austin... Riemers Ranch, etc. |
|
I second what James said. Enchanted Rock and maybe Reimer's Ranch are your best bet. Erock has a mishmash of cracks, bolts, slab, steep rock, and boulders. It's mostly a traditional environment but there's a few sport climbs. Almost everything out there is top rope accessible. Reimer's is grid bolted sport climbing. Not really top rope accessible but I'm sure you'll find plenty of rope guns around. It can get crowded in the popular spots at Reimer's. Honestly, I think the place is overrated. I prefer Erock despite the longer drive (from Houston), longer approaches, and substantially heavier pack. |

www.ctmrocks.com is a good group and the meetup group in Austin is pretty active. |

Thanks for all the info guys! I am moving to San Antonio for military reasons. My first big move do trying to make friends and join groups etc before I get there thanks guys! |

Hey! |

erockonline.com is defunct. It looks like Sean deactivated it but still has a placeholder image there or something. I get only a header image when I try to load it. |

Vannie, |

try http://www.erockonline.com/forum/upload/index.php? to get to the central Texas climber's forum. I grew up climbing in and around Austin and this forum made Mountain Project relatively obsolete. They'd be the guys to ask about cragging in SA also. You don't have to drive to Reimers to get outdoors. |

Definitely get in touch with the CTM. There is also a Meetup climbing group in Austin I noticed. You'll probably drive to the Greenbelt in Austin to climb most of the time and then go get a bite to eat in town. Reimer's is the bigger limestone sport area and it has a new place called the North Shore. It's a county park, so there is an entrance fee. Pretty quickly you'll see how small the climbing community is and you'll see most of them again and again out at the crags. Enchanted Rock is your granite trad area. That's just outside Fredericksburg. Cool about that wall in San Antonio. I always heard access was a pain. Keep it on the down low and you'll be able to enjoy it longer.Erockonline is still there and active, but many of us are having trouble accessing it with Safari. Not sure about other browsers. Anyway, you can get to it with a link or bookmark such as the one above. At least one of the SA locals is currently working on access issues in that city. Hopefully, things will improve there. |

I appreciate you guys being so helpful. I cant wait to meet up with some of you guys and climb, as long as you don't mind having a girl around :) I will do research on some of the sites you guys provided and let you guys know when I'm ready to go. I still have to find where my gear is packed, it may be a month or so.... Keep the info coming!!! Thanks for all the input!! |
|
I was also able to access erock but I will keep trying periodically. |

The place in north San Antonio is called Medicine Wall, we have info and topo's up here on the site. There's also Cub Cave in Stone Oak Park on the north side, 60 foot overhanging juggy climbing, from .11D to hard .13s. |

Rachel, I used to live in Austin and still keep in touch with some of my climber friends there. I'll try to introduce you to them. |

Thanks Russell!! |

Moving to San Antonio... I sincerely feel sorry for you. I lived in Texas for ~24 years. I was elated when I finally left. |
