Mount San Antonio (Mt. Baldy)
Mt. San Antonio/Mt. Baldy
Mount San Antonio, more commonly known as Mt. Baldy, is the highest point in Los Angeles county. The south bowl of Baldy has had a history of ski mountaineering dating back to the 1930's and the "Sierra Hut" is still popular with skiers in the winter and spring. Numerous short couloirs add fun starts to the open bowl. In a "good year", San Antonio Falls, which is located on the approach to the bowl and summit can form into an ice route.
Take Baldy Road from Claremont or Upland to Fall Road, located just below the ski area. Park and walk past the gate toward the Baldy trailhead.

This route heads right up the north side of West Baldy. It follows a major gully from the head of Fish Fork up to the summit of West Baldy. Usually deep snow near the bottom, and some ice near the top.Generally speaking, this is a fun climb similar to a section of Snow Creek but with a much better approach.A good way to approach would be to hike up Ski Hut trail and climb up the Bowl. Descend to the col between Baldy and Dawson, and then head west and down into Fish Fork. Check the topo image at...[more] Browse More Classics in CA

Does anyone know if the ice is in on Baldy yet? I'd love to go ice climbing but want to make sure there is ice before I make the drive. Thanks

What are the current conditions of the bowl above the ski hut? Is the enough snow for a snow climb up it? Any beta would be appreciated. Thanks!
