Description Suggest change

A large boulder with a few nice lines and some potential for more. I'd say it is a good 15-20 ft high by 25-30 ft wide. The main face is slightly overhanging. The rock type is the same strong and gritty anorthosite found at the nearby cliff as well as the rock found at the popular Sawmill Creek Dome bouldering area just 15 miles south west. I am sure people have done these before and probably named/graded them. I am posting them with names for reference and for others to enjoy. Let me know if you have any info as I will happily edit.

Getting There Suggest change

These directions differ from the main Carlton Peak page. I believe this way is much less of a hike because you are driving to the base of Carlton Peak. The road is rough so take care not to ground out the Prius. You will need a Minnesota Parks sticker to park as well.

On highway 61 between mile markers 81 and 82 is a turn off across the road from a large brown wooden Superior National Forest sign. Take this road a couple of miles to a parking lot located just around the corner from the Carlton Peak sign. Stay right at split just up from 61.

Hiking from the parking lot, stay left at split and take this old quarry road staying left until you see a pathway with boulders pushed to the sides and an outhouse and picnic table down the road in the other direction. Take the path staying left at all splits. Staying left at the third split brings you onto the SHT. Keep staying left at the turn that brings you to the peak. Keep to the well worn SHT trail as there is a left spur trail at this junction. The trail will then bring you along the bottom of the cliff face. When the SHT departs and descends away from the cliff, stay up along the cliff face until you see a picnic table 10-20 yards down on the left. Walk down past the picnic table(bushwhacking if you need to depending on the traffic and season)directly to the monster boulder.
