Monster is the large rock mass in between Middle Marker and the South Seas area. There are various routes leading to the top. Climbing ranges anywhere from scrambling up until near the top and then climbing a short 5.6 face, or to doing a 4 pitch 5.11+ from the face nearest to the road (Valhalla).
Park at the trailhead for the Markers. From the sign-in location, the downhill side climbs are a short distance to the west. Walk on the trail that forks left from the register to the big rock. For the uphill side climbs, follow the trail uphill that heads north and splits the Monster area with the Marker area. Once around the rocks of the Monster area, take a left and scramble up slabs and work your way back in the direction of the car to the base of the climbs.

First pitch is very thin and unrelenting. Several cruxes throughout, one requiring standing up with one leg and no handholds to assist. And a vicious redpoint crux waiting to kill all your efforts. Take a no hands rest at the belay anchor and go for the top or break up into two pitches. Second half is much easier (5.10) but engaging, and a classic by itself. Difficult to grade, but possibly the hardest slab in the hills?...[more] Browse More Classics in SD
