Moab Ice Park

Not that this is a reality. But with the moisture and spell of frigid temperatures not seen in 50+ years, Moab holds its own. Lot of little curtains appearing everywhere, but this was by far the largest collection. I would not recommend topping out, as the soft rock would surely take a beating with the mandatory mixed finishes. Not tall, but what do you want, you are in the desert.

But if Moab can have ice, why not a park on the Front Range? If anyone knows where I could contribute time and or money to this cause speak up.

These pics were taking while out visiting family over the weekend. I was really skeptical when I was told they had their own little park forming. Enjoy.

I can't believe nobody is climbing that stuff. It may be short but it looks nice and techy.

Andy,

I hesistate at first posting where this is, but I do not think people are really gonna drive out of Colorado to climb ice in Moab. I suppose if the weather is right you could hit this ice in the morning, and then some cracks in a T-shirt on Wall street that afternoon.

Interestingly enough this area is called Ice Box Canyon. Just West of Negro Bill trailhead. For those familiar with the area, the entrance is just to the left of the River Road Dihedrals. Trail back is obvious. If anyone were to climb it I recommend a TR set up, and keep the mixed to a minimum, as the water seeps out of the rock, making it brittle, and sandstone scars easily. The pillars themselves are not all the bonded to the rock, more so the moss at the top. Some pillars not pictured did look stout and would take screws, but to each their own. A TR set could be reached from the Slickrock trail, or someone harder than me could lead the ice up to several stout finger cracks above.

This area is very popular with the local hiking community, as they are the ones who showed me. So please tread lightly. Then again its your world too.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
