The last stop before Austria, this town is known for making violins. There are at least six established climbing areas around Mittenwald. If you are looking for alpine climbs, go to the Oberbayern Alpine section, there are some classics here. Imagine Hermann Buhl climbing here in socks with a couple pitons he had found.
The rock here is the solid grey weathered limestone from which the Wetterstein range gets its name. There are at least 6 established crags here.
