It is surprising to find a place with such high quality ice climbing in Midwest. The two main ice pillars, when in, would be considered great in Ourey's Ice Park.
The ice falls are formed by excess water draining from the heating system in a private property atop the cliff. With the owners permission, climbers added fixed pipes, which in a very good season, help in forming of three awesome ~150 ft icefalls/pillars. Additional mixed and drytooling routes also exist.
Getting There
From St. Paul, get on MN-36 E towards Stillwater. In downtown Stillwater turn right into E Chestnut St/MN-36, crossing into Wisconsin over the bridge across St Croix River. Continue on WI-64 E for about 2 miles and turn left onto Anderson Scout Camp Rd. At the boulder turn left into Twin Springs Rd. Follow it to the end. When parking ensure the gate or the driveways are not blocked. Maintain low profile and be respectful to local residents.
From the gate, drop down to St. Croix River, turn right and continue along the cliff (the river has to be frozen) until you see the ice falls on the right. Ascent grade 2 slope to the base of the cliff.
The Classics
Mountain Project's determination of some of the classic, most popular, highest rated routes for Stillwater Ice (Stillwater):
Most awesome WI5 ice line available in Minnesota. The climb has roughly two sections. The lower is a thick pillar of pumpy WI5 ice. The climbing varies depending which side of the pillar is climbed. Little rest is available between the two sections. Second section is a thin smooth pillar leading to the top anchors. Ensure the ice is solid and the pillar isn't detached before climbing this one. If the top isn't in, it's possible to traverse left from the base of it and rap.It is possible that the...[more]Browse More Classics in MN
No ice!!!! I went out this weekend and there was NOTHING there. I wonder if they stopped letting people climb there? Does anyone have any information on this?
Also, does anyone have any info on the rock routes on the same cliff AND across the river in MN? They look chossy and old, but i am curious. I see upwards of 50 to 100 bolted lines.
Went to scout this one out yesterday to see whether it is coming in and saw very little save for thin ice on either side of where the main pillars seem to form when they are in. Does anyone if this is going to be flowing this year as I did not see any water dropping either...
