several months ago rumor mill said the spokane mountaineers removed one of the top rope hangers for the Dihedral. today i checked it our, there's only 1 hanger there with a 1/4" bolt and another 3/8" stud sticking out of the rock where there should be another hanger. when will it be replaced? i'm new to climbing and don't feel qualified to replace it. i'm willing to help if needed.

I was there a few weeks ago and also saw this. I just brought long webbing and backed up the bolt with the tree that is 25 feet back or so. Worked just fine. As far as the hanger, did the spokane mountaineers really take it, or is that a rumor. They would probably only take it if the bolt was bad, but then why wouldn't they also pull the bolt and replace it. This is not that hard to do, and I'm planning on doing it next time I visit Minni. Although I'm not sure when that will be as the summer alpine season in the Cascades is here. My guess is some hiker thought it would be cool to have and unscrewed, and took it. It's not hard to replace a hanger, just go to mountain goat or mgear and buy a hanger and a nut of the appropriate size. Put the hanger on first, a washer next if you want, and then screw it down.

If you're I newer climber I'd highly highly reccomend Q'emlin park in Post Falls. Super user friendly. Very easy to set safe top ropes. Also there is a lot of easier climbs there. Plus no angry bull snakes like at Minne.

Awesome i'll do that, just went to Q'emlin park memorial day weekend brought the kids, went to the garden wall, looks like the perfect place to start lead climbing with all the hangers on the routes. minne just happens to be accross the river from the armory so it makes a great lunch time climb. the rock seems much more abrasive than post falls though.
should i drill for a new bolt on the hanger since i don't know if the one there is long enough?

Dihedral is Minne's classic. Lead it!

More seriously though, good beta regarding the tree. I haven't seen the stud personally, but generally cinching the top end of a chockstone wire up on those is better than not using them.

Is that old piton still there about a quarter of the way up? We used to joke about clipping it, as it was so old that it was a token clip, knowing it would never hold a fall.

Dihedral's the one climb where I've seen someone hit the deck. Dude fell at the crux (40 feet up) and zippered his pro, bounced off the bottom ramp and fell to the ground. He was unconscious for less than a minute, suffered from repeated short-term memory loss, and then was fine by the time we got him to the hospital. Angels watching that guy that day.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
