I've never been in may, but I've been told that if you avoid the mid-afternoon and try to climb in the shade you can climb through the summer

I would say too hot in May you could try and crag in the shade, just too hot for most of the multi-pitch climbing.

How about end of march?

from elpotrerochicoguides.com/we…

Best Times: November - February

November through March are considered the prime climbing months because the temperatures are usually in the 60's and 70's. There are occsassional storms in midwinter, but suprisingly it can be raining in camp and be dry only five minutes away in the canyon.

March and April are still great times to climb in El Potrero Chico because the crowds are smaller and La Posada's pool opens mid-March. The temperatures rise to the upper 70's and 80's but it there is lots of shade to be found.

I've been twice in mid-to-late March. Both times there were days when we were sweating on the walls and had to chase shade, and days when we had to wear jackets to climb. Like someone else said, rain in March can sit at posada but you'll have dry climbing in the canyon. Another added bonus of March is that it's dead, so you can climb most of the longer stuff without having to wait or share with other parties.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
