Is it true that Maverick is closed from 4/1 to 8/15?

Not sure. I've never heard about that before. I bet Sam Lightner Jr knows...

"Seasonal closures are in effect annually in Long Canyon and at Chimney Rock to prevent disturbance of nesting and fledging raptors from March 1st – August 31st"

Good thing Maverick isn't in Grand Staircase Natl. Monument.

sorry for the misinformation, I looked at the wrong "Long Canyon" when searching what I thought was strictly the BLM Moab site.

OP might want to change the misleading thread title.

per an email response from BLM

Your Question: Is there a closure of Maverick Buttress in Long Canyon off Potash Road in effect?

BLM Answer: Maverick Buttress is denied to commercial climbing because it is in the heart of desert bighorn sheep country (as you may know, it is right next to an important bighorn sheep watering location).

While the Buttress is not closed to private climbing, we do ask private climbers to choose another climb during the lambing season (April 15 through June 15). I must reiterate that this is merely a request -- it is not a closure.

Please let me know if you have further questions,

Katie Stevens

Thanks for posting, JLH. Good to know about the lambing season.

The original issue was spawned by a sign where the trail meets the road. Sign indicates "No permitted climbing activities from April 1st-August 15th.

so the question was really how do the land managers define "Permitted climbing activities."

OP either contacted the BLM or someone from the BLM is on MP....suprised? you shouldn't be, the BLM and other agencies gather information on these types of cites/forums.

Props to Moab BLM and the OP! Great thread and good info. Be considerate of the Bighorn and help preserve access!

I didn't know about the sign. I've never heard of the BLM shutting down Longs for wildlife hence my question. I deleted my post. Thanks for clarifying.

MIYG it's all good. Sign is fairly new.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
