If you check site availability, there isn't a whole lot left for June, with Friday - Saturday nights being traditionally problematic. For the entire month of June, there are only two available Fridays and two Saturdays. Only one of those Fri/Sat combos are in the same site.

On national forest land in an incredibly high use area with existing camp sites. What an excellent idea.

Then stay home
There is no room for you.
Keep our small amount of public lands in their natural state.

If you continue on the dirt road through Maple, just past the last pit toilets, eventually you hit a really rough section. If you continue up that section, over the pass you'll find 4 or 5 really nice sites that are pretty rarely used. (And are free I assume...). I'm not sure on the mileage, but the rough section is between 1 and 2 miles I think. On labor day last year there was only one other group in that area, while the main campground was full.

Our group had a Toyota SUV and a Chevy truck that handled the road just fine. But I wouldn't be too keen on taking my Outback up it.

Not sure if that's the style you're looking for, but there is some pretty deluxe sites up there.
