Late thursday evening, after climbing the new route Rosy I, my partner and I decided to climb Slimy Spoon in 1 long pitch to finish the day... I told him to time me, to give me some motivation to fire it as fast as I could. I pushed the stopwatch and started running. When I topped out, I ran out of 60 meters of rope and yelled down off belay! I like to belay over the ridge top of the Lower Ramp to be set up for the 5.0 down climb descent. SO, I was simul-climbing to get over the ridge top and my partner was getting on the start of The Slimy Spoon. Something was taking him a while.... Then he started to climb! After reaching the top, he shared with me that he didn't have his climbing shoes on when the rope came tight.... and he had stepped up and out of reach of his shoes. SO, unfortunately, he heroically climbed the entire 200' climb in his hiking shoes. He never hung on the rope so it was a great effort! Partially my fault for tugging on him to climb fast and his for not putting his shoes on sooner. When he got up near the Fork Finish, he tried to climb out right to make the moves a little easier and had to reach down to unclip the BRAND NEW RED #1 CAMALOT below him. Instead of pulling the cam out, he just unclipped it and kept going... Instead of weighting the rope to get it out... he just kept going. Thunder, Lightning and raindrops were threatening and a sense of urgency was in the air. And then, instead of telling me he left my NEW #1 Camalot at the top of the climb, he told me after we had down climbed beneath the Super Arete Area. It was late and sprinkling so we figured we would go back and get it... But when we went back to get it..... It was gone. End of story.
If anyone wants to return this NEW #1 CAMALOTw/red nuetrino+quickdraw, It would be greatly appreciated! And my buddy wouldn't feel like he has to buy me a new one..... Thanks and hopefully you all find this to be a funny story...
