Lookout for thieving bastards on mt lemmon

Just a heads up, there are guys working in Summerheaven looking to steal anything unattended. Here’s what happened to me last week:

After a long day and finishing at Chimney rock, I chose to leave my 60 lb pack and a rope at the bottom of the cliff (road) walk up, get my van, then pick up my stuff on the drive down. Call me lazy, call me old, whatever. Probably not the smartest thing to do, however, I’ve done this many times before without a problem. Nevertheless, I drove down and my stuff was gone!
Long story short, a high speed pursuit took place with speeds over 80 mph and I did get my stuff back. Much more went on, however, I would need several pages and much time to give the story any justice.

Be on the lookout for a gold pickup truck (not sure what model) AZ plate number akv6198
These guys will nab your pack in a heartbeat!

That’s about all I got on that. BTW, I have a bunch of gear for sale both rock and ice. Email me at: jfassett@msn.com and I’ll send you the list.

Be safe,

JF

I'm glad you didn't post this under a "lost" heading.

Calling a thieving bastard a thieving bastard is like it should be.

You can run his/her plates through dmv and get an address assuming the plates and or vehicle weren't stolen.

A full story with juicy details is indeed in order. You can't just say I chased them down and some other stuff happened...make that short story long dude.

I agree it aint right to post you chased some thieving bastards down and not tell us what you did. What if someone else is in a similar predicament and needs to do he same

Nobody got a beating if that’s what you’re looking for. I got my stuff back and really just wanted to put a warning out to other climbers.

The gear for sale was just a side note,

It used to be a free service until a stalker killed an actress in the late '80's I think.
Now for a fee there are several websites out there that offer use of license plate look-ups like this one here.
E-How.com also states that if you file a police report that includes a license plate number of a vehicle, that person's personal information will be included in the report.
This report, and the information within, is now public record.

Dude ... really?? Dont even bother givin the plate or car description!! 8 out of 10 cars will grab a pack you leave on the side of the road! You do know that the top of Mt Lemon is not a Buddist temple with only monks driving up n down the highway?? right?? yeeezzzz... 60lb pack?? At chimney rock?? what?? Sure youre not headed in the Sierra backcountry for a month? You might as well leave your purse along the side of the road and then bonehead up and complain that someone took it!! Hate to say you deserve it but..... hard to feel like you have enlightened anyone. Just cause you done a dumb thing over and over and got away with it; doesnt make it smart. The other side of the road from Chimney rock , like 10 feet away, is trees n brush. So you could get out your tampex an walk with your 100lb pack 10 feet to stash it somewhat out of sight. I know I am stating the obvious; but since the basis of this thread is to state the obvious... well....there is no justice to this story... only a grunt of "say what? Really.... really.... stop"

be safe... have fun... dont be a bonehead!!

cheers... lou

Harsh! I really don’t even know how to respond to your abrasive comments except, stealing is stealing period!
By the way, I was working and my guide pack has much more in it than a few draws. My question to you is this… did I get your plate number right?

Don’t be an ass!

Lou,

I know JF quite well.

He has more days logged on Mount Lemmon than almost everyone I know; he's no fool. He is a well-known local guide, he carries his gear and that of his clients. Consequently it's not unusual for him to carry 60 pound packs.

With regards to the "tampex" remark this guy has done some pretty badass stuff over the years. I consider myself very lucky to have roped up with him.

Also, if anyone deserves to have his pack stolen it's definitely not him. JF is about as funny and kind as people get.

I mean, he's probably not doing it on 5.11, but IMO he's basically soloing every time he sets up a climb while being "belayed" by some of these clients. Not really "tampex" material lol

Considering whatever he might earn probably makes little difference in his life, I'm glad he's out there sharing the stoke and teaching people some skills.

PS I personally don't leave stuff unattended ever 'cause I'm too paranoid from growing up in LatAm, but for the U.S. it doesn't seem like some super boneheaded move, the parking lot is like 100 yards uphill.

Although I will admit Tucson is not quite like a normal American city, it's kind of a cross between one of those and Third World country city..

J, Glad you got all your gear back!

I lived in Tucson for a few years and was able to climb and hang out with JF a time or two. He is a great guy, period.

Nope. Guess you have never picked up a police report before. Personal information that is not yours is redacted.

What would you do with that info anyway? Drop by their home and harass them? Other vigilante stuff?
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
