I'm heading out to the boulder field tomorrow and it's raining today. how long does the boulder field take to dry after a rain storm? I've climbed at placed that take a matter of ours and others that take days to dry out enough to climb.
Several hours of dry weather will leave some of the problems dry enough to climb but you will be limited. The roofs tend to seep. One-two days of dry weather will leave most of the problems in manageable condition. The sandstone, vegetation growing on top, and humidity keep the place pretty damp after rain.
Its always a bad idea to boulder on sandstone too soon after a rain because it can destroy the rock and destroy the route. I personally saw someone rip the crux hold off of a route at Lilly, literally minutes after I mentioned that the rock looked too wet and might break. Lilly is secluded in that little cove and it retains a lot of moisture after a good rain. My advice is to give it another day to dry to be safe...but if you aren't willing to wait, only climb routes that are completely dry. I understand wanting to get a session in, but think about others as well and keep routes as they are by not risking any breakage.
Thanks for the good advice. I'll make sure we only climb on dry stuff and it looks like its drying out now. I've been the guy who popped off a start hold, turned a V3 in Hueco into a V5, course it was dry at the time but it was a bummer none the less. We'll make sure to take care of the area and stay off wet stuff we encounter.
