Sassolungo (Langkolfel) group Rock Climbing

The Sassolungo group is directly adjacent to the Sella group – sitting directly to the West of Sella Pass. This group of mountains is a horseshoe shaped set of peaks opening to the northwest. The North and Northeast faces of Sassolungo are complex, long (1000 meters) routes rising out of the Gardena valley below Sella pass. The South and West faces offera greater variety of routes of different lengths and difficulties.

The Langkofel Group--also known by it's Italian name as the Gruppo Sassolungo--consists of 3 major summits: Grohmannspitze, Fuenffingerspitze, and the Langkofelspitze. The corresponding Italian names are Sasso Levante Grohmann, Punta della Cinque Dita, and Spallone del Sassolungo. A smaller but no less important summit is the Innerkoflerspitze, Campanile Innerkofler in Italian.
The massive group of mountains is the feature which dominates the Groednertal, or Val Gardena, and sits on the Northwest side of the Sella Pass. The view from Wolkenstein is overpowering to the first time visitor.
Trails encircle the massif, and spur trails allow access to the major Jochs, or Forcellas in Italian.
