Description

The main lobby of the Keene Family YMCA has a 32 foot high, 980 square foot artificial granite climbing wall built by Rockwerx in 2011. Routes contain a mix of natural rock features (the artificial surface is heavily textured with "natural" pockets, cracks, edges, etc) and climbing holds, although climbing "features only" is an added challenge for experienced climbers. Due to the surface's innate textures and features, the climbing resembles outdoor climbing on real rock more than most typical indoor climbing gyms. There is a small overhang, although the routes mostly run at or near vertical.

Routes are rarely taped and not graded. There are seven top rope belay stations. Top rope only, no lead climbing. Bouldering permitted on the lower part of the wall (climbers not to climb higher than eye level with the light fixtures on the main floor or double their height, whichever is lower).

The wall is available for use by members or guests during regular YMCA hours when it is not being used for programs. Typically, open climbs are run mid-week during the evening in which YMCA Climbing Staff and Volunteers are available to belay. At other times, belay certified YMCA members and guests can open and close the wall and climb on their own. Belayers must be belay certified by qualified YMCA Climbing Staff and must check in with the front desk before climbing. Members and non-members may be belay certified, and must renew their certification every six months. A climbing wall orientation and belay certification clinic for experienced belayers is offered once a month.

Harnesses and shoes are available for use free of charge. The YMCA also runs youth climbing classes and programs, and the rock wall may be rented for birthday parties.
