Been lurking for awhile on this forum. Great stuff! Haven't climbed in 15 years due to raising four kids. The kids are now ready to experience some climbing. All of my experience has been with sport climbing. Taking the family to JTree for three nights in the middle of November. Going to try and stay at Belle because it seems pretty quiet and out of the way. Would like to do some toproping one of the days. Don't have gear, need bolts or natural anchors (preferably walking up to set the toprope). Any inside suggestions for Belle or Jumbo Rocks areas to toprope with kids 3,5,10, and 13? Thanks much.

A good start would be to get Miramonte's guide book. I'm quite sure you can get a copy at Nomad Ventures in the town of Joshua Tree.

top of white whale, lumpy ridge

i would recommend going to the hall of horrors and walking to the backside of the second formation, where you can find a small highly featured wall with bolted anchors accessible by scrambling. The route names are buckets to burbank, ledges to lawndale, ect. Have fun!

Hey Man,

I posted something similar a little while ago. This may help you out. Not all of these are bolted though

J Tree after blizzard

What day of the week do you plan on arriving? The campgrounds fill up fast on Fridays and tend to stay full until Sunday. If you arrive on a Friday night you may end up driving a long time while looking for a spot as the campgrounds are also far apart. Jumbo Rock has the most sites and usually fills up last out of all the high desert campgrounds there. If you can arrive on a day other than Friday or Saturday, your options will be much better.

Have a blast. No matter how much you get to climb on rope, kids always love scrambling on the endless rockplies.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I am planning on picking up Miramontes guidebook. We are arriving on the afternoon of Sunday, November 18th and leaving that Wednesday. Hopefully, we'll be able to snag a good campsite for those days. Will definitely look into that Hall of Horrors area. I borrowed Vogel's huge guidebook from 1992 to try and get my bearings of jtree. I've also done quite a bit of research on this website. I live in O'side, San Diego County, and since I can't really afford to take my family skiing, JTree sounds like something to get into. Thinking about taking an anchor/intro to trad two day course through one of the local jtree schools later this winter. Spent a couple of summers before kids sport climbing the Owens Gorge and Clark Canyon up near Mammoth. Now that I'm older, I've been reading a bunch about traditional climbing, and it really is intriguing. Seems like much more strategic and mental than powering up bolted face climbs (although that was fun back in the day)

Big Boulder, just a bit downhill from Temple of Kali. Alabama Hills, CA.

Hi, Belle has some great TR's

Belle is a great place to do this, you will not be in the way.

Go look at the troll about youth to Josh.

If you can 3rd class you can set up some good little climbs.

Have fun

I did not read the previous posts as I'm sure there are many good suggestions...JT TRs are everywhere.

My advice is bring plenty of webbing or cord as often the gear is placed aways from the actual climb.

I was there this weekend. We came in on Sunday, November 18 and I think we got the last spot at 3:30 p.m. in Jumbo Rocks. The place fills up early.

I went up there to do the same thing the JTmann did. We didn't have much luck with finding routes, though. I wish I had seen this thread before going up there.

Any other suggestions or other links would be very helpful. I would like to try again.

Thanks
