The totally sane, John Yablonski (Yabo). RIP! Phot...

This large formation just to the south of Cap Rock has a few nice routes on it. A paved nature trail surrounds the formation and passes by several bouldering routes. The routes are all easily identified and the short approach and easy walk from Ryan campground (1/4 mile NW) make this area a good one if your stuck without a car.

Getting There

From Cap rock, the John Yablonski rock is the large formation just southof cap rock. The low angled slab containing Hartman (5.6) is easily visible from Cap Rock.

This is a beautiful though short crack on a a low angled slab easily visible from south Cap Rock. The climb begins at a short bulge to gain the crack. The crack ends at the top of the slab and it is possible to set an anchor directly above the crack or to move right onto a comfortable ledge above the slab. The crack is clean and beautiful on the slab, making it worthwhile despite being very short. A good route for beginning leaders....[more]   Browse More Classics in CA

Was this rock named in memory of Yablonski or was he one of the primary developers of routes on it? Just curious.

Although John did do the first known route on the formation (Meteorite Crack), the rock was named named many years later, in memory of Yabo.
