Hey all,

Im going to have a few free days while travelling through Mexico City. Anyone have any experience climbing at Jilo or Chonta? Was wondering how it is in terms of finding partners in the area and such.

Any beta is appreciated, cheers!

Climbed at both. Weekends you might find locals you could hook-up with but that's about it, maybe there would be some gringos but I wouldn't think so. More chance at Jilotepec then Chonta but the crew from the DF go to Chonta on the weekends. The grades at Chonta start at 11b where as Jilotepec there are lots of easy to hard. Good luck! Oh ya check out XPMexico.com

Any new information on Jilotepec (Dexcani Alto)? I'll be in the area in November and would love to climb. Can I find a partner? Is there a local climbing club? Guide service?

I ended up spending most of my time visiting friends in Puebla (Pericos) and Xalapa (Cerro Brujo) so didn't make it to Jilo or Chonta. I met plenty of folks at the climbing gyms in the areas I did visit so I'd recommend maybe reaching out to some of the gyms in Mexico City or just visiting them when you arrive to get some more info.

Thanks. I'll check out a gym or two and see what happens. Will post here if I make it to Jilotepec climbing.

I just arrived in Mexico City and an traveling solo.. I’m staying in the general area for at least a month if finding partners is possible. I wish to stay in one location for weeks at time if finding partners is consistent. Sounds like it won’t be though. Anyone in this thread know of a climbing area in central Mexico that finding partners is easy. Would I have better luck at Pena de Bernal??

Los Dinamos is closer to Mexico City but it’s not consistent to find partners.. and you don’t want to be there after dark.  The route info for jilo in the central/south Mexico guidebook is out of date but reasonable.  (Unrelated.. the Chinese food in jilo is really good). You are likely to find partners through the week at Bernal.  Dia del cactus and Cadena nebular are good fun multi-pitch sport out there.. easy to simul or link pitches

Aculco is in that area too.. might find some people on weekends

Good luck and have fun!

Thanks for the info, it’s much appreciated. Checked out a gym today to get some info from local climbers. Was told similar advice. Pena de Bernal as the best area for finding consistent partners. As well as that it is not recommended to camp at dinamos, jilo, or Alculco as theives are aware climbers do this and there have been issues with it.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
