I've been climbing in J-Tree for a quite a few seasons now, mostly leading in the 5.6-5.9 range. Haven't been able to make much progress in the numbers as I'm only getting out maybe once per month and I'm tasked with leader duty each time. Hopefully working some harder TRs will allow me to start pushing the grade later on lead.

Anyway, I'm looking for an area(s) off the beaten path that contains several routes in the 5.8-5.10(b) range that have TR access. I don't mind a long-ish hike, if that is what it takes. I have no interest in the usual TR clusters like Indian Cove Campground, Echo Cove, etc. I'm open to whatever type of climbing -- face, crack, or slab.

Thanks all.

Good news, you can TR most of Joshua Tree w/o leading. I'd suggest using the search function to find routes in your grade range and cross reference those in your guidebook to find some areas you haven't been.

There are some fun routes at Stirrup tank, some fun faces on the Red Burrito, good times had at Erotic City, junk at Brownie dome, etc.

The other option of course is to start seconding a stronger climber.

Have fun out there.

Stirrup looks like a good choice. What's the chance is be able to find a campsite in White Tank or Belle on a Saturday morning?

High Desert Sunrise, Joshua Tree NP

Just walk more than 15 minutes or so from any parking area and you will be "off the beaten path". The key exceptions to this are The Astro Domes, Lenticular Dome, Bighorn Mating Grotto and Outer Mongolia - YMMV.
