It keeps the porcupines from eating the underside of your car while you're out climbing. It wouldn't be good to have your brake lines chewed through when you make the drive home.

They go after the propylene glycol by chewing through your radiator hoses. Kills 'em dead, not to mention it's a long way to the parts store. Propylene glycol is super sweet and is a main ingredient in Grape flavor soda- yummy!!
Mark, check the photo at full resolution. It is not the wood stopping the porcupines, but the chicken wire! The wood just holds the chicken wire in place.
Why is it that only in the Bugaboos have porcupines figured this out? Are we soon going to have to do this everywhere? Also, I think it is ethylene glycol that is in antifreeze.

You are correct George. Ethylene glycol is often the ingredient of anti-freeze. Many newer anti-freezes use propylene glycol because it is not as toxic especially when diluted. Still bad for the critters though.
Perhaps you could spray something on the tires and underside of the car that would repel the quilly little fuckers. Ammonia? WD-40? I think the government of Canada should solve this problem. They owe it to us Americans! I don't know why...but they do!
