New to NC... obviously no ice here. Anyone ever head north for some ice climbing? What's nearest?

J,

I would check out this forum

www.mountainproject.com/v/the-2012-13-colorado-ice-condition>>>

Yearly thing where conditions around the state are gathered, pics posted and people pretty helpful.

I live in Fort Collins and love ice. You are right. None in town, but RMNP has some, about 50 mins in the early morning. I am sure you have already been up there.

Looking to get out--let me know.

Myself placing a a blue/yellow offset MC to protect between Bolt 2/3 just post crux .

Picture credit goes to eric Singleton, and many thanks to Josh Bagget for the great belay.

both looking glass outfitters and fox keep running tabs in the winter if ice is in...whitesides, highway 215 and a fw other locales do get formations in good years...i'd get on the CCC or SEC boards for more updates...if it forms it tends to only be in for a bit

Thanks jb! I used to be a regular contributor to the thread... working out of state for now though. Not a lot of ice on the east coast unless I head north...

Brian Abram, leading pitch 2 of Dinkus Dog on the South Side of Looking Glass. Kyle Sox is belaying.

There is occasionally ice in NC. Some years as early as November and possibly into February. You can watch the forecast for Cashiers, NC, and if you get about three days of consistently freezing temps among several other cooler days, there may be climbs in.

Graveyard Fields on the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the more consistent bets, but getting to it can be a pain when it is actually in. A bike or skis, depending on conditions, can help. A couple years ago the BRP there was covered in 16 inches of powder the whole way. Amazing for this part of the world. Whitesides has several pretty classic lines. 215 is sort of the quick and easy cragging spot. There is a lot that is harder to find unless you make nice with some folks in the know. A place like Mt Mitchell can yield the longest ice lines in the south if you know where to look.

Talk with Phil at Looking Glass Outfitters. He can probably point you in the right direction.

There is ice in NC. When I lived in Charlotte, a few of the guys I knew went out for multiple days every winter. Like someone else said, you just have to get in with the right crew or know who to ask to find the spots that come in every year. Just for clarification, I have never climbed ice in NC or anywhere else, so I cannot tell you exactly where to go.

Good Luck!
