I'm assuming you're talking about the pick in which case it's probably just surface rust. A light sanding/wire brushing will clean it off. If it's bad enought that it's coming off in chunks then you've needed to replace your pick for a long time.

A quick method is to use a wire wheel on a drill (a circular wire brush with a shaft that allows it to go on a drill). You can always paint them a swank color of rust resistant paint to help prevent recurrance.
