How to tell Nut size when is worn out?

Does anyone know the best way to look at a nut and measure it or similar to see which size it is please, as all my nuts are worn down and no longer show the Number/size?

Any thoughts or ideas much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Take it to a store or compare it to a friends...

you take some other, new nut at the store and size your oldie worn one to it.
or find the crustiest, old sob at JTree and ask him!

Or do it by weight on a scale at home. In the field I rarely use the numbering just match up the hunk of metal to the gap in he crack

Just remember what your biggest nut size is. Arrange them in order, and count down.

No good if you no longer have any idea, or you mix and match brands, or you have gaps. But who does that?

Also, it doesn't matter on the cliff: if it fits, it's the right size! :-)

if you've used them enough to wear them down, you probably don't need an answer to this question, as you should know instinctively which nuts will fit in the placement at hand. I never see a placement and think I need a green nut, or a #whatever, i just pull the right size buy sight out of the bunch and set it in there.

If you are asking because you want to see if you have a full rack, and are considering buying some so worn down that you can't tell if it's smaller or larger then the ones in your set already, don't buy them.

Ok, good points. I have a few gaps, but when lining them up I figured it out on my own.
I have old nuts that are not colored.

Thanks everyone for your time! Apologies as I should have figured this out myself.

One other quick question please;

I have doubles of nuts in most sizes up to #10.
Does anyone recommend a double in size 10 or 11, and if so, which one? I have doubles in size 9, so was thinking on getting another 11 as I remember this being a popular size for routes along the front range.

Thoughts again please? Thanks dudes!

If you have worn the stamp off of your nuts, you should retire them immediately. If you cannot see the markings, then you have obviously worn off some of the metal and the nut is now compromised. I recommend purchasing a new set. I don't recommend a fancy color coded sets either, since you will not use the markings as a wear indicator (as they are intended). If you can still see the color (and not the stamp) you will still know what size it is and may be tempted to not retire the nut when you should.

I sincerely hope you're trolling.
If not and if you ever wear off the stamp from your nuts, send them my way for disposal. Both sets.

Hey douchebag; My stoppers never had paint. Maybe I went a little overboard with my last question, but I haven't climbed trad for years and I'm wanting to see what everyone is using these days.

Yeah, douchery is off limits here.
However, there's absolutely nothing in guideline #1 preventing anyone from acting like an oversensitive and hypocritical twat.

Start a thread asking what kind of paint works best to color-code your nuts.

Let's see how you react when being called 'this stupid'.

Do you always jump on people when it has absolutely nothing to do with you? Who's the one with the problem here. Maybe I asked a pretty silly/random question, sure, but don't think being called stupid is warranted.

To quote my buddy Rambo; 'they drew fist blood, not me'

ps. All love for ya Boissal & BSheriden!

Buying the milk is still cheaper than buying the cow, regardless of nut size.

Classic man! We oughta hook up some time bud. We have similar goofiness which is rare these days.

Throw me a PM when you are ever in need of a partner. I'll go and climb anywhere.

Thanks again everyone!
