Mt. Baldy, from the Cemetery.

Description

The original High Desert sport climbing area, this collection of sunny crags was established by the motivated crew of Jack Marshall, Sam Owings, Troy Mayr and others starting in the winter of 1993. Hugely popular in the early years, the parking area was often brimming over with vehicles but with the more recent development of New Jack City and other areas the popularity has waned considerably.

The rock here is very much like Joshua Tree, and like there varies considerably from formation to formation with quality ranging from decent to execllent. Most of the rock is a somwhat grainy tan color but the best stuff is chocolate brown or grey and noticeably smoother in texture.

The routes tend to be on the shorter side, ranging from 25-80' with most around the 40-50' mark, fully bolted and equipped with chain or cold shuts for anchors. Despite the diminutive nature of some of the routes the climbing is fun and it can be a great place to escape the cold during the winter months.

Location

Situated in the town of Apple Valley off Hwy 18 approximately 1 mile north of the Bear Valley Cutoff - the actual address is 24320 Highway 18.

High desert climbing is at an all time low, I wish someone would do something about opening up the Horsemens Area and Dead Man's Point. These were great area's once and could be again. Taking my first trip out to NJC tonite, hope it is as good as advertised.
