Help me plan a sweet anniversary trip... please?

Howdy,

So my 10 year anniversary is coming up and my wife and I wanted to go somewhere cool. I have been given the following requirements:

  • Sport climbing, preferably some multi (with some easy/moderate trad too would be nice)
  • August, while the kids are off school
  • Luxury, drinks with colorful umbrellas, maybe a spa
  • Awesome rest day activities
  • Safety (mostly from a travel perspective)
  • International

I was kind of all over the map. We really wanted to go to Thailand but apparently there exists this thing called monsoon season...

Anyway if anyone has any destination recommendations, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Maybe not International enough for you but....I would head to Banff/Jasper and it's neighbor the Ghost

John has it.... one of the best places to visit and climb at.

The "back of the lake".... is phenomenal.

Skaha in BC....if you can stand the heat there in August. Yes, possible to follow the shade, but it's still uncomfortably to unclimbably hot. Highs of over 40C are not uncommon.

Just got back from a climbing trip to Spain about a month ago. It was awesome. Sport, Trad, fun via Ferrata. Nice mountain villages and mountain hut. Not a beach scene though, although the ocean isn't far.

Here is a trip report and some photos: Trip Report - Spain

Kalymnos would be pretty hot.

I would look into the Calanques in Southern France. That place looks rad and hits all the requirements.

Finale Ligure, Italy?
It is summer, on the Italian Rivera. Not sure the mix of beach vs climbing you are looking for but it might be what you are looking for to celebrate the Big Ten. Congrats.

Wilder Kaiser in Austria, which I liked better than the Dolomites:

Note that Aug is peak vacation season for the Euros.

There is always Hawaii. No multipitch though. Temps are warm but reasonable in August. Average high around 89.

Otherwise, South Africa sounds killer. I have always wanted to go to Cape Town!

August is winter and rainy season in S Africa.

Wilder kaiser is perfect for the period and fit your expectations. But it is limestone. if you prefer granit, south swissland (grimsel, furka, St Moritz, ticino).

Both places are secure, not too crowded with friendly people, perfect for C2C climbing. Dolomiti could be good but not a lot of sport routes and C2C climbing is mainly possible in Sella range

Calanques in the south of France are great, though France in August is hard (everyone is on vacation, lots of things are closed and deserted or incredibly busy). Also during the summer, the Calanques can be closed often due to risk of fire hazard.

Puerto Rico was really nice. We went in January - I don't know the weather at other times though.

You guys are awesome.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. So many options here I hadn't even considered. I know what I'll be doing for the rest of the day...

Cheers!
Corey

I take-back my Sardegna suggestion, I didn't pay attention to the fact that you said August.
Hot, massive crowds, etc......but if you can go to Italia any other month, do it!

Can't say enough about Arco and the Lake Garda area. It has thousands of routes, with many multi-pitch sport, town revolves around climbing, weather is decent in August, and it has all the requirements you listed. Also, Marco has the best gelato on the planet.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
