Description Suggest change

Hatta is the closest cliff to Dubai and thus has a central place in "UAE climbing", though technically it is in Oman! The climbing style is either fun juggy overhanging climbing on weird blobs or crimpier stuff on a more compact surface layer over the blobs. Rock type is a resilient limestone, quarried nearby to make faux-marble flooring. The cliff will likely end up quarried itself one day but probably has a few more years left.

The cliff is described in detail in "UAE Rock Climbing" (2009) cordee.co.uk/cca395.php

There have been a few new routes since the guidebook was published, though none especially classic.

Getting There Suggest change

Drive east out of Dubai on signs toward Hatta town. The cliff is hidden in the hills north of the main road about 10km beyond the Madam roundabout and before Hatta town. The guidebook has a clear approach map.

Currently (early 2011) there is an informal police ID check for cars passing into Oman just east of Madam. It is not a formal border post - passports are inspected not stamped. The true Oman border post is significantly further east beyond Hatta town (which is back within the UAE! - are you confused yet?)
