harness wear from water
|
Hi, I'm new to climbing, and I have sort of a newb question. A few months back, I left my car trunk open all night with my climbing harness in there. That particular night, there was a substantial downpour and my harness was soaked when I realized my trunk was open the next morning. I was just wondering if being soaked like that would have any effect on the strength of the belay loop or harness overall. In other words, is it still safe to use for climbing/belaying. |

If you don't have any other chemical in your trunk, then your harness is fine. People climb ice and snow, harness gets wet all the time. |

As long as you are 100% sure it's just water, then it should be fine. But if you are in doubt, replace it and send it to QC lab or other facility for a test so they can study it for future research. |

Although a few of the pools I have dropped into while canyoneering were pretty skanky. That said read this article for a bit of thinking: blackdiamondequipment.com/e… |

Thanks for the advice, guys. I don't think there were any chemicals or anything like that in the trunk, but it's hard to remember for sure. Going along with the mental comment though, the harness in the black diamond article is the same one I have...kind of freaky. Honestly, I think it will probably be fine though. |

You'll be fine. No need to replace a harness that got wet. |

It's not the water that you have to worry about, it's other chemical in the trunk that you have to worry about. If you have a second hand car, who knows what the first owner put in there. |
