hardshell help

I'm looking for a new hardshell. I've had a paclite jacket and can't stand goretex. It feels cold, super clammy, and I always wind up damp from the inside. So I'm looking at Event and the Patagonia M10. I'd prefer event, but so far can't find a good fit with the few companies using event.

Anyone have any experience with the M10?

Can anyone compare the fit of RAB's Latok Alpine and Momentum?

I ordered a Med and Large in the Latok Alpine and neither fits well. The med is too short in the arms and way to tight across the chest/shoulders. The large fits great in the upper regions, but is very baggy in the body. Does the Momentum fit any differently?

I have the M10 jacket and love it. The pants are trash but the jacket is pretty slick, I'm still unsure about the durability, but that isn't the purpose of the piece. The cut is great, I have a bit of a gymnasts build, a little thicker through the shoulders and it fits great.

I have the momentum and like the way it fits, long arms, good waist length and the main torso fits snug but with enough room for a light base layer and power stretch. Hood fits well over my helmets. Definitely prefer event over Gore (IMO paclite sucks). The Momentum does seem a little thin and I've had to patch a sleeve after catching it on a tree skiing. I believe Wilderness Exchange has started carrying the Momentum if you're int eh Denver area.

Have you been using event or patagonia M10?

I ask because I find that proper layer management and pit vents are more critical to comfort than what type of breathable fabric you use.

No tech fabric will breath well enough to keep you dry in humidity or if you are sweating.

For what its worth, I really like my REI Taku pants. I'm never too hot or too cold. They make a jacket out of the same materials. I had a very old event hardshell that was fine. I'm sure they've improved the the fabric since then, too.

Currently, I have a mountain hardwear Terra jacket which is very versatile and comfortable.

I have the Rab Latok and its been fairly awesome. Its light and tough and windproof but way more breathable than gore-tex. I had to size it bigger than I thought so consider that. I'm 6'4 200 pounds and needed an XL.

I found that the Momentum is a little slimmer in the body than the Latok Alpine. The arm lengths are about the same. Going by what you said, it seems that the Momentum might fit you a little better. But, it is a thinner fabric, and there are also other design differences such as napoleon pockets. But it breathes pretty well, and is a good hardshell backup that doesn't put much extra weight in your pack.

I haven't used event or the M10. I have heard many good things, from a lot of different places saying Event is much better that any gore product. I don't know about the M10 and am hoping someone may be able to compare the breathability to gore/event.

I dress very light and stay relatively dry and comfortable most of the time. However I have found that with the paclite on it gets uncomfortable very quickly. Removing a layer prior and I still get uncomfortable and clammy. Hardshell isn't ever going to breath like a thin woven jacket, but there are defiantly better options. Thats what I'm after.

I've been quite happy with the Patagonia M10, but I have yet to find any hardshell (or even a "windproof" softshell) that actually breaths enough to matter. If I exert enough energy, I'm going to sweat in a t-shirt when it's 10* outside.

You should wait a few months...Air Permeability.
