I've got a 4 day weekend, a rental car, and a real beginner. Where do I drive for a couple of days of good beginning climbing? I don't trust her with belaying me, so I want to work through the basics on toprope. Where should we go?

well, CT IS known for its abundance of top ropes. I cant think of one cliff you cant TR here, with a 100ft of anchor rope/webbing at least. plus many of the locals will be traveling out of state to climb with the holiday and all.

Peterskill area in Minnewaska State Park, right up the road from the Gunks (outside of New Paltz). TS

Mobley- I haven't climbed in CT, and as I've scanned the route DB on the site, I'm not getting a clear picture of what areas would be a good place to go. The trapps? Since we're looking for a few days of climbing, I'd like to go a place that has good route density within a reasonable driving distance.

Go to Peterskill. It's not crowded, it allows 75 climbers per day I think, so get there early. $7 person/day. You can walk up to the top and set up top rope anchor, rappel down or hike down. Some of the climbs already have bolts. Bring a long (75 - 100) static line for those climbs that don't have bolts. Rock & Snow sells a guide booklet. Peterskill park is the same direction, maybe 15-20(?) minutes pass West Trapp parking lot (Iron Bridge).

You were right - peterskill was perfect; very easy toprope access, no loose rock, easy to communicate between climber and belayer. Thanks for the beta.
