Gear help

I'm moving from the south to Massachusetts for grad school and am trying to figure out my cold weather gear while there may be some summer sales. I'm used to 1" of snow/year, maybe, so I need super basic info.

I have:
Snow boots
Arctery'x Atom LT
Arctery'x Konseal 3/4 zip

and that's about it besides a sweater or two and a pair of tights or two.

Would you guys recommend getting more mid-layer stuff to wear beneath the Atom or a bigger outer jacket or maybe a hardshell to wear over it? Will I need softshell or snow pants for day-to-day or can I just stick to jeans and tights?

I'm tall and skinny (6'2, 150ish) and obviously I climb, so I'd like anything I get to be functional with that. I've probably got $1000 or so that I can spend on new gear, but I really need some help on it.

It rarely goes below 40F here in winter, so yeah. I don't know what to expect. If you're not helping, why respond?

Where are you coming from, what kind of climbing are you planning on doing and where? I've been living/climbing in NE my whole life so I am sure I can lend a hand I'm just not sure what your exactly looking to do. Are you looking for general winter clothing advice that would also work for climbing?

I'm coming from New Orleans and will be at UMASS-Amherst. I'll be sport climbing and bouldering as much as I can, but yeah, I'm mostly just looking for general winter clothes that would be transferable to climbing. I'm not sure where I'll be climbing. I've never actually been to the northeast and won't until I make the move.

You're right, I can't help. - the added noting of self dimensions, personal allowance, and future plans posted in conjunction with your weather inference threw me for a troll-inquisition loop sir clcrabtr. sincere apologies, enjoy your unpredicatble northeast livin

If you're planning on climbing ice or mountaineering or cold weather camping or otherwise spending time in the backcountry in winter:

Pants:

Top:

or

Add gloves, good wool socks, warm hat, along with the stuff you already have, and you're there.

You will probably also want to look into a warm puffy jacket to throw on over top of everything else. Something like this:

If all you want is clothing to keep you warm around town in winter, or bouldering/cragging near the car, then you're probably fine with jeans etc.

Okay, well New England is an interesting place. You mentioned sport climbing and bouldering. I am going to assume that your planning on ice climbing and winter mountaineering.

To start I generally try not to mix my climbing clothing with my casual wear for general winter use. I pay a lot for high quality gear, and I dont want it getting ruined during day to day use. With that being said, UMass is bigggg, and you should plan on some long walks and cold bus stop waits on cold cold days. You'll probably find that most people at UMass wear jeans all winter long. Everyone wears a hat, some sort of winter coat and light gloves that you can find at a pharmacy or walmart. Most people where something like a snow boarding coat, usually big enough to wear a sweatshirt under. A popular jacket looks like this: burton.com/default/squire-s…

I would recommend this strategy to start out. If you've never been ice climbing you could easily hate it, and then you spent lots of money on high end gear that you could easily never wear walking around campus. Ice climbing/winter mountaineering gear is a whole different ball park, and I would look towards online articles and other resources to get some ideas.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
