Found gear at the Gunks

I was able to clean a stuck piece at the Gunks. If you tell me the piece, the route, and when you left it, I can get it back to you. lukasf@gmail.com.

Blue micro nut on first pitch of High E? Brown and red tricams on High E? #3 Camalot on Suderiferous? Hopefully you didn't clean the nut nests that serve as ad-hoc rap points anywhere... Nut on Tetonia?

Don't those things just pop out of the rock all by themselves?

Green alien on Try Again? Failed to get it out this past Sunday Morning 8/16. It was in the small crack just below the big ledge ~20ft up.

What if the OP was just a bored local? Now OP got everyone to reveal all the stuck pieces in the Gunks so he or she can go clean house on this crummy day.

I'll add that there is an old #1 on face to face....good luck

If half the posts mentioning lost pieces are true, the Gunks is like shopping at the Annex to the Rock & Snow Annex!

That's a hell of a coincidence! The first time I visited the Trapps we went to R&S after the day was over to turn in some stuff I found. I commented that the cliff looks like the store. Haha..

The annex is a pawn shop for what is found on the cliff for many people. You lose it, you go to the annex to replace it. Somebody finds and cleans what you couldn't, sells it to the next guy at the annex. Rich just keeps making money on the same nuts over and over again. He has been there long enough that he may have sold the same piece of gear a dozen times or more! Best part is he puts so much back into the climbing community!

This post is totally just giving me a tick list to go expand my rack a little more...

An honest and genuine post by someone trying to do a nice thing (some would even say the right thing), by returning gear to someone who lost it. And immediately it turns into relentless sarcasm and one person inevitably posting the official rules to being a selfish asshole..

Shocking. Thanks Lukasz, for being a decent person. While they may be a minority on this forum, fortunately there are many good and helpful climbers in the Gunks, and it's good to see some people trying to be nice here as well. There's really only one rule that matters, 'Don't be a dick'..

To the snide individuals who love to brag about their booty: Yes, stuck gear is usually the fault of an incompetent leader and/or follower. Yes, you can just keep any gear you find without making any effort to return it to the original owner, and few people will ever give you a hard time about it. And what you are obligated to do (ethically, by social convention, etc) can and will be debated endlessly. But few would argue that returning someone's gear is a nice thing, and that most people would be glad to have their stuff back ('losing face' or not). If you really want to be an asshole, no one on this forum is likely to change your mind. But stop trying to convince others to do the same, as if getting enough people to follow your 'official' codes of conduct for dicks will make it okay. It doesn't.

And for the record, I've never lost gear that either I or my partner has placed.

PS- I really wish those 'official NEIceTradman booty rules' would be printed on a T-shirt and widely sold, or better yet made available for free, near every major climbing area. It would make it much easier to spot, and avoid, obnoxious people..

Sara,
Although what you wrote was in jest there are those who actually follow the booty rules. In addition a lot of new people to climbing and the forums read what is written, then take it to heart. Lastly the booty rules that a lot of climbers spew are directly contrary to the law.
Thus a post like Dan's is needed during these discussions to put things on track to what is considered the decent thing to do when gear is found.

Cheers and have a mellow day on the rock.

Pretty sure that people are doing a little good natured riffing on the fact that the OP mentioned neither a date when he found the piece, nor the route or even the crag he found it at. I think that merits a tiny bit of gentle teasing.

Ok...I just want to set the record straight here. OP is my husband, and we were trying to return the cam after seeing the poor couple next to us trying to retrieve it for like a half hour (they were gone by the time we climbed the route). Also, we are both thoroughly enjoying this thread.

I'm glad and heartened to see that Sara's post was in jest. That was not obvious to me, since I've seen others take that viewpoint seriously, in other threads. And as David pointed out, I do think we should be explicitly clear about such things- New and impressionable climbers reading this forum could mistakenly get the idea that such unscrupulous behavior is accepted in our community, and that would be a shame.

Peer pressure does work, and research shows that people are highly influenced by what they think others in their community are doing- Not just what is considered acceptable, but that other people are actually doing it. So the message in Sara's last post is a powerful one- Most climbers are good people, and do the nice thing. I think this is an important message, worth putting out there repeatedly: that most climbers do follow an ethic, not just in regards to booty but in all sorts of ways(LNT, etc.).

As far as the humor, I found most of the comments quite entertaining. But as much as I enjoy it, I think it derails the intention of the OP and makes the forum a lot less useful to everyone when a thread gets filled with 90% jokes and sarcasm.. I'm sure that makes it harder to find any serious replies.

I will now disembark from my high horse.. I think the poor beast was getting tired from balancing on that soapbox..

Dan, the funny part was that any given time the Gunks has hundreds of stuck gear in its cracks.

That booty rule is a good one. That said I've returned found gear even though I knew I wasn't obligated.

1) Nobody cares what you think or feel.

2) You don't seem like the kind of person who would get off (oops..."disembark") your high horse. Sorry, don't believe you.

3) I hope someday to booty your gear whilst thou is embarking in the embarking lot!
