Ugh. Crappy. It was tied to a tree midway of the rappel to prevent the rope from being damaged by being whipped around constantly by the wind. I'll swing by and check it one of these days. Maybe tying a alpine butterfly to isolate the damage would keep it from getting worse.
Didn't think of knotting it off - would help a bit. Though that might be a surprise to next person with a rap device on the line. It may be far enough down to not be visible from the top.
Once we saw it, we switched to using our own rope.
I wondered if one mitigation would be to once a year (?) move the rope up a few feet. This sheath damage was in the same spot as the last time years ago.

Even if it has core shots, it would be useful for anyone who bails from the Shield and needs to climb out from the base of the Shield back to the Crest. If the fixed line is in poor condition, the rap is 100' and is easily done with a single 60m rope.
Good point about those escaping, George. On the other hand, it is somewhat of a hazard to those rapping or ascending.
