First Ascent Route Naming

As I understand it, tradition holds that when a climber completes a first ascent, he/she earns naming rights to the route. If this is correct, and short of being a guide book author, how does one go about officially naming the route so that it is relatively immortalized as such in the climbing community?

Tell a guidebook author.

Put a topo at your local climbing gear dealer.

Or...spray it here on the route database.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
