Fire on Backside of Flatirons
In case you haven't heard, there is a fire growing on the backside of the flatirons near Bison Boulevard. Flagstaff Road is closed at baseline and 6th, and the smoke is engulfing some of the flatirons (the mace I think). |
That fire went from small to huge in about 30 minutes. I watched the plume grow from the boulder ski deals. |

as of now (just after 5pm) |
Yeah, it's looking really bad from Denver.... |
This is becoming surreal. |
I'm not certain, but it appears the largest flames are directly behind the summit of South Boulder peak. |
Damn this hits so close to home :( |
yeah- it's on top of South Boulder and Bear Peaks now-- working it's way down Shadow Canyon.......... |
Had a bit of rain. Situation appears to be much improved. I could see trees burning just below the summit of Bear. Don't see any active flares now. Smoke has decreased drastically. Looks much better than it did a couple of hours ago. |
WOW! |

was in boulder canyon all day and had no idea. I looked in my mirror driving north on 28th and saw the plume, really shitty. I was actually planning on going to climb the 2nd tonight. I think they've stopped air operations now too.. seems like if they continued with the help of a little rain they might be able to get a handle on it. |
The Herc flew another run a few minutes ago. It looks pretty good now. |
Great news... |
Whistling past the graveyard. Its laying down at the moment. Look at the 'successes' with the other fires going; at best they can defend some strips for awhile if the wind is cooperating, and they will be focusing on the million dollar estates around there. Pray for calm winds tomorrow. |

Delta Bravo wrote: I'm afraid that Colorado's Katrina is at hand.I kinda agree... anyone ever hear of the 500 year fire? Fire stories haunt the spiritual mythology of intermountain west Native American tribes like flood stories do the cultures of ancient Mesopotamia. Godspeed to all the firefighters and threatened homeowners. |
lots of fire visible still... |
What's the word on climbing in Boulder Canyon? |

The City Of Boulder's Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) has closed the Flatirons due to the fire. All open space west of Broadway/Highway 93, north of Eldorado Springs Dr. and south of Canyon Blvd. is closed. See OSMP's page here: |
